Boating Fun Fest 2013 at Koko Marina Center

Boating Fun Fest 2013 at Koko Marina Center

On Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 9am to 2pm at Koko Marina Center boating safety partners across the Hawaiian Islands are teaming up to promote “Ready, Set, Wear It!”  for “National Safe Boating Week.” The goal is not only to promote the comfortable and versatile options when it comes to life jackets, but also to educate the public about life jackets and safe boating in general. Each year, as many as 500 lives could have been saved if boaters had worn their life jackets. The  market today makes it easier than ever for a boater to have fun and stay safe on the water. Drowning remains the primary cause of death in recreational boating accidents. Statistics released by the U.S. Coast Guard indicate that 84 percent of boaters who drowned in 2010 were NOT wearing their life jackets.

Teen killed in skateboarding accident identified

Reid Krucky

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Those who knew him said Reid Krucky loved to ride skateboards and snowboards.  He was good at it.

"Being one of the last persons that saw him was kind of hard on me," Sierra Bassett said.

The teenager grew up in the house across from the Krucky's in Hawaii Kai, on the same street where the accident happened Wednesday.  Police said Reid had grabbed onto a friend's moped, was towed about 30 yards, then fell off his skateboard and hit his head on the pavement.  He died at the hospital.

"We knew him when he was little," Carolyn Ohashi said.

From her home she often would Reid and his older brother, Kyle, playing ball in their driveway.

"I know they were very close.  Kyle will miss him terribly.  We will miss watching them play basketball in front of their house," she said.

Teenager dies in skateboarding accident

HAWAII KAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- A 16-year-old boy is dead after a skateboarding accident in Hawaii Kai on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. on Kalanipuu Street.

The teen was reportedly being towed by a moped and slipped off his skateboard near his home when he hit his head on the pavement. Authorities say he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

On Facebook, the family of the victim identified him as Reid Krucky, the son of well-known local businessman Anton Krucky. Neighbors of the victim reportedly told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser than he was a sophomore at Kaiser High School.

According to Emergency Medical Services, Krucky was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

His has been classified as an unattended death, although police recently said they have opened a homicide investigation.
