Regulars at Koko Head shooting range show support for arson suspect

By Minna Sugimoto - bio | email

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Waialae Iki man accused of shooting a flare gun and starting a wildfire at Koko Head last Friday was released from Honolulu police custody Sunday afternoon, after spending two days in the main cellblock.

People who know Kevin Nakagami, 29, say they're surprised that he was arrested at all. They describe the Koko Head Shooting Complex employee as a responsible, safety-conscious guy.

"Kevin has always been very conscientious and kept the public safe," Russell Takata, Chinese Gun Club of Hawaii, said.

Swimmers lament loss of Alan Davis "jumping pole"

By Brooks Baehr - bio | email

HAWAII KAI (HawaiiNewsNow) – A utility pole secured boulders and pointed out over a popular swimming spot called Alan Davis along the Kaiwi Shoreline has been cut up and removed. Swimmers who for years have used the pole as a jumping or diving platform are sorry to see the pole go and want to know why it was removed.

"This place is magic. I mean you come here on a sunny day and just hang out and jump into the ocean. Swim a little bit. Climb onto the rock. Warm up. Jump back into the ocean and the log was an instrumental part of that," said Kealoha, a Nuuanu man who was disappointed to find the pole missing.

"I was like mad and disappointed," added Kalihi resident Shahanna Avilla who was with friends swimming at Alan Davis Friday.

"It's not as fun anymore. Kind of took the uniqueness away from it," commented Kaneohe Resident Caitlin Keolanui-Bradshaw.
