HSPLS Continues Internet PC Reservations Upgrade: 8 Oahu Libraries Start April 29

The Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) will perform an upgrade to its Smart Access Management (SAM) Internet reservation system in eight Oahu public libraries beginning Monday, April 29 through Friday, May 3.  The computers at the following Oahu libraries: Aina Haina, McCully-Moiliili, Waialua, Ewa Beach, Kalihi-Palama, Mililani, Pearl City, and Hawaii Kai will be unavailable for reservations beginning today through the completion of the upgrade in each library.  Walk-up sessions may or may not be available, depending on the progress of the upgrade.

SAM is a computer-based system that allows users to reserve and register for Internet sessions in HSPLS’s 50 public libraries; it helps HSPLS maximize the use of public Internet computers and ensures equal access for our patrons.

Boating Fun Fest 2013 at Koko Marina Center

Boating Fun Fest 2013 at Koko Marina Center

On Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 9am to 2pm at Koko Marina Center boating safety partners across the Hawaiian Islands are teaming up to promote “Ready, Set, Wear It!”  for “National Safe Boating Week.” The goal is not only to promote the comfortable and versatile options when it comes to life jackets, but also to educate the public about life jackets and safe boating in general. Each year, as many as 500 lives could have been saved if boaters had worn their life jackets. The  market today makes it easier than ever for a boater to have fun and stay safe on the water. Drowning remains the primary cause of death in recreational boating accidents. Statistics released by the U.S. Coast Guard indicate that 84 percent of boaters who drowned in 2010 were NOT wearing their life jackets.

12th Annual Hula Ho'olauna Aloha Festival Bridges Japan and Hawai'i Through Dance and Friendship

WHAT:

12th Annual Hula Ho‘olauna Aloha. Once again, Japan and Hawaii unite in celebration of hula. This exceptional two-day event honors hula’s traditional customs and vibrant culture. The event features a dance exhibition by Japanese and local halau at Kāhala Mall, as well as a dance competition among visiting Japanese halau and a Hawaiian craft sale at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Coconut Grove.

The public is invited to attend both events; however, seating at the hula competition is limited to participating halau and their friends and family, and local residents with a valid Hawaii state ID.

Created in 2002, the annual Hula Ho’olauna Aloha hula festival bridges Japanese and Hawaiian culture through a shared love for the hula in its birthplace. More than 500 dancers, family, friends and hula enthusiasts are expected to attend this year's event.
