Ocean Safety officials urge public to listen to lifeguards

EAST HONOLULU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Ocean Safety officials are urging the public to listen to lifeguards for their own safety.

Officials released photos of five men at the Halona Blow Hole Saturday who repeatedly ignored city lifeguard requests to move from the edge to a safer location. A large swell then crashed into the rocks, putting them at an even higher risk of danger.

Ocean Safety lifeguards responded to the situation and found all five men climbing up the rocks to safety when they arrived.

No injuries were reported.

Hawaii Kai Fourth of July fireworks canceled, says organizer

July 4, 2012 at Maunalua Bay

HAWAII KAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Hawaii Kai will celebrate Independence Day 2013 without a firework show.

The Maunalua Communities Foundation (MCF) on Thursday announced, " Unfortunately this year's event will not feature fireworks because as of April 30 MCF has not received enough sponsor funding to afford the pyrotechnic display which represents 60 percent of the budget."

"We have explored all the alternatives to shooting the fireworks from a barge in the bay (most expensive option)," explained Dianne Glei, 2013 event chair. "However, we could not find a suitable land site and even when the fireworks company worked to provide us with a reduced-cost option, it was still too expensive based on our funding projections.

Keala K. Simeona

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Detectives have determined that the female who reported finding a baby at Sandy Beach on Sunday night is the baby's mother, a Honolulu Police Spokesperson tells Hawaii News Now.

One day after the story of a newborn girl being found unclothed and unharmed on the east Oahu shore made national headlines, police said 21-year-old Keala K. Simeona, who brought the baby to the hospital, is actually her mother.

The Makiki resident was arrested at HPD's main station for allegedly filing a false police report and released after posting $250 bail. Additional charges are not being pursued at this time, according to police.

Original reports from officials stated that the baby was discovered near the water sometime after 11 p.m. Sunday after a woman reported hearing her crying.

Abandoned newborn discovered at Sandy Beach on Oahu

EAST HONOLULU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Detectives are searching for the person who abandoned a newborn overnight Sunday at Sandy Beach Park.

Officials with the Department of Human Services say the baby girl was not injured, but is under observation at the Queen's Medical Center.

"I think first and foremost, we're happy to report that the female infant is doing quite well. She's drinking formula, weighs approximately 8 pounds," said Patricia McManaman, the Director of the Department of Human Services.

McManaman says the baby girl appears to have been born a week or two early and was delivered within the last 24 hours.

The infant was reportedly discovered unclothed at Sandy Beach by a 21-year-old woman who heard a baby's cries coming from the shoreline and found the infant alone in the sand.

Teen killed in skateboarding accident identified

Reid Krucky

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Those who knew him said Reid Krucky loved to ride skateboards and snowboards.  He was good at it.

"Being one of the last persons that saw him was kind of hard on me," Sierra Bassett said.

The teenager grew up in the house across from the Krucky's in Hawaii Kai, on the same street where the accident happened Wednesday.  Police said Reid had grabbed onto a friend's moped, was towed about 30 yards, then fell off his skateboard and hit his head on the pavement.  He died at the hospital.

"We knew him when he was little," Carolyn Ohashi said.

From her home she often would Reid and his older brother, Kyle, playing ball in their driveway.

"I know they were very close.  Kyle will miss him terribly.  We will miss watching them play basketball in front of their house," she said.
