Schnitzer Steel and Kokua Hawaii Foundation join to relaunch Aloha Aina Recycling Drive

First drive of 2013 will be on Saturday, Jan. 26, at Niu Valley Middle School

HONOLULU – Schnitzer Steel Hawai‘i Corp., the Kōkua Hawai‘i Foundation, and several local recycling companies have formed a partnership to continueone of O‘ahu’s most popular recycling events, the Aloha ‘Āina Recycling Drives.

Schnitzer Steel and the Kōkua Hawai‘i Foundation believe that by joining together, they can introduce a reinvigorated Aloha ‘Āina Recycling Drive effort that will embody the strengths and environmental philosophies of both organizations. The recycling drives allow island residents to turn in a variety of unwanted items including used appliances, clothing, computers and more to be recycled into usable materials.

Kaiser Student in the Finals for Alaska Air's "Paint The Plane" Contest

Alaska Air offered Hawaii students an opportunity to create a new design for their airplane. The top three designs were submitted by Sophia Cleek, a sixth grader at Kapolei Middle School on the Island of Oahu; Izabela Hamilton, a 12th grader at Seabury Hall on the Island of Maui; and Aaron Nee, an 11th grader at Kaiser High School, also on the Island of Oahu. Sophia's design depicts a voyaging canoe sailing around the Islands, among various ocean wildlife. Izabela's design incorporates a male and female hula dancer against a backdrop of ocean waves and windswept mountain cliffs.

Hawai‘i Students Can Stretch Their Minds in the Verizon Wireless Innovative App Challenge

Hawai‘i students with a forward vision can show off their science, technology, engineering and math smarts for a chance to win big. The Verizon Wireless Innovative App Challenge allows students from across the nation to compete to win $10,000 for their school. Members of each winning team will also win Samsung Galaxy Tabs.

The Verizon Wireless Innovative App Challenge is a collaborative competition created to encourage students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Student achievement in STEM is critical to U.S. economic growth and competitiveness on the global stage. This challenge has been designed to engage students, provide them with valuable new skills and experiences, and open their eyes to exciting new possibilities in STEM.

HFD Bring Out The Big Guns @ Kaiser

The Honolulu Fire Department's Hawaii Kai Station ran checks of their equipment and practice time with their high-rise fire hoses at Kaiser High School's Football Stadium Friday evening. At the conclusion of Kaiser's football team practice athletes, parents, and coaches were treated to an amazing demonstration of the capabilities of the Honolulu Fire Department.

Watching these fire fighters move through the careful steps in this friendly and safe practice session, we're reminded that they are one of our neighborhood champions - - men & women who stand ready to give aid to our community and their mission to save lives and protect property.
