Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation Awards $97,000 in Scholarships

The Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation, Inc. has awarded $97,000 in scholarships to 61 exceptional seniors from every qualifying public and independent high school in Hawaii. Nominated by their respective schools, the award winners received scholarships based on academic achievement, community service and financial need.

Two students were presented Distinguished Student Awards of $10,000 each and one student received an Outstanding Student Award of $5,000. Seven high school seniors received $3,000 scholarships and 51 additional students were awarded $1,000 scholarships.

"Mr. and Mrs. Takitani's legacy of commitment, dedication and generosity is honored each year through the Takitani Scholarship Foundation," said KSSK Radio personality Michael W. Perry, chairman of the board, Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation.

The weather may have dampened Honolulu Waldorf School’s annual Waldorfaire back in March, but it didn’t dampen the spirit of this K-12 independent school in East Honolulu. 

Waldorfaire, the school’s annual Renaissance-theme family fair, has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 5, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 350 Ulua Street in Niu Valley. The school’s May Day program will take place prior to the fair, at 10:00 a.m. Honolulu Waldorf School’s sixth grade students will serve as the royal Hawaiian court that will be entertained with Hawaiian dances, songs, and chants performed by students in Grades one through twelve.

This event is benefiting the newly formed Kaiser Complex Scholarship Foundation of the Hawaii Kai Chamber of Commerce. This year, one large scholarship will be presented to a student at Kaiser High School and another donation will be presented to the Kaiser complex for each of the local schools to support academic and enrichment programs.

Niu Valley Principal Wins $2,000 Leadership Award

The Island Insurance Foundation presented its eighth annual Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award of $25,000 to Debra Lindsey, principal of Koloa Elementary School on Kauai, at the annual Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation Dinner held on April 13, 2012 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

The award, named in honor of the late Masayuki Tokioka, founder of Island Insurance Company, Ltd., is presented to a public school principal who is visionary, community-minded, and has an entrepreneurial spirit – qualities of leadership that Tokioka exemplified in his own company and in the business community.

Punahou School and Hi’olani Care Center at Kahala Nui start an ongoing program to bridge gap between generations
 
 
Hi’olani Care Center at Kahala Nui, a senior care community that supports and encourages residents to remain active and engaged, and Punahou School, a school committed to social responsibility and community service, initiated a program that brings young children and elderly adults together.
 
Punahou’s youngest spend time at Hi’olani Care Center interacting, communicating and learning with the elderly by playing bingo, paper-based games, reading and doing mild exercises.  Such a buddy program has benefits for young and old.  Elementary-age children learn a sense of responsibility, how to interact with different people, develop communication skills and value the opportunity to make a difference in an older persons’ life.  Interaction and connection with youth can k
